You’ve just snagged an incredible black and white image, but now you’re wondering how to turn it into a stunning Technicolor masterpiece. Step 5: Add Mask

Now for some next level stuff! You’re going to selectively apply certain parts of your new color overlay onto specific areas of your grayscale original so that some parts pop out more and others less so they’re not too overwhelming.

To do this effectively click on the layer mask button listed as a square filled with white whilst looking at all of my current layers- believe me- it makes sense!

The result will be fillers full of black masking off the blue, giving you a black and white version of your original image- it might look like you’ve gone backwards, but have faith!

Step 6: Grab a Brush and Start Painting

With the layer mask selected in the layers panel grab yourself either the brush tool or gradient tool. We’ll use a brush for now.

Before coloring however ensure that your foreground color is set to white before painting on to your black mask revealing parts of your underlying blue color.

Start painting over the areas of interest in your image keep brush strokes consistent and even to achieve the best results.

Step 7: Adding Gradient Layer Mask

The last step is adding some depth by using gradients on other parts that will help with blending. Whilst clicking on one of my layers click “add layer mask” then when prompted select “Gradient” from the drop-down menu at the bottom.

With this done select an area roughly between mid-points of where you’d like to see darker and lighter areas respectively- for instance if using skies go from upper left corner dragging diagonally downwards towards lower right (preserve aspect ratio) until satisfied then repeat process creating another gradient layer below however drag from upper right corner downwards towards lower left – experiment there are no rules but many good results have been achieved with radial gradient fills as well.

Once done assess everything looks tip-top then save as normal!
